dandyCommute series: Queen East and Parliament to College and Havelock (approximately 6 kilometres)
Describe your commute:
My almost-daily grind from home on Queen East at Parliament to my shared commercial kitchen at the Depanneur on College is about six kilometres and usually takes less than 30 minutes.
Twice a week, I use my trailer to deliver freshly baked bread to local stores and cafes. This may not technically be ‘commuting’ but it can, depending on the day’s orders, add as many as 20 kilometres and two hours (off and on) of total bike time.

Why do you commute by bike?
It’s usually the best available option!
I don’t drive, I’ve never had a driver’s license (though I held a learners’ permit years ago). For me, biking is the right balance of fast enough to get places, not fast enough to kill anyone getting there.
What is the best part of your commute?
I like riding to my kitchen in the wee hours. Depending on the season, it’s still dark or just dawning a new day. The streets are mostly empty and the birds are starting to make some noise.
What’s the worst part of your commute?
The death-trap crosswalk on College at Havelock!
What is the most surprising part of your commute?
High fives from strangers!

What infrastructure change would make your commute better?
Thank you for asking! Less glass on the street would be nice. I mean, actual bike lanes separated by actual barriers would be super-duper, but until then less glass-y streets please.
I see (and hear!) those Madvacs (like a ride-on vacuum-tractor) driving around everywhere, often driving by piles of broken glass in the street. The one operator I spoke to told me they can only pick up ‘recyclables’.
I just worry about my tires/tubes. And that awkward moment where you have to choose between the glass shards by the curb and the cab on your left shoulder.
